Best handy cam for shooting a newborn - pls suggest format, zoom etc.?
The one which uses DVD are cheaper than the HDD ones, please agree to me know the advantages & disadvantages of both format in practical use. Also suggest the max optical zoom i can seize.
And any other information which you think can back me.
I'm a fan of Sony products so gimme some reason buying some other if it's better than sony.

Answers: Generally, Sony seems to own the best low-light capability. I'm not a big adherent of the DVD camcorders, and am still leery of the hard drive models. High definition is still a work contained by progress. I recommend you purchase either a Sony mini DV or DV 8 (DV short for digital video). Don't expect a great optical zoom for your price array. Besides, with your foreign baby you'll probably want close ups. If you shoot abundantly of footage from far away you'll need to buy a tripod. Good luck!
You don't want a lot of zoom for a babe. Zoom is for stuff you can't get close to. Actually you will probably want a broad angle adapter so you can get closer and still see everything. These are available for almost every loving of camcorder.
If you are not good near computers and don't plan on editing your videos, later a DVD camcorder would be very convenient for you, but this convenience comes at the cost of lower feature and higher price.
DVD and HDD unit cost more to make than cassette units do. If you attain a budget DVD or HDD camcorder, most of the cost is going into the storage part, instead of the lens and sensor which is what determines the point you get. Tape mechanism are cheaper, so you get a better camcorder at like peas in a pod price point. I'd suggest a miniDV camcorder, or even HDV (high def) if you can stretch your budget to $700 or so.
The nice thing more or less tapes is that tape give you a cheap, long-lasting backup in need putting all of your eggs contained by one basket approaching with HDD cams.
