How to upload video from a videocam onto the computer?

I dont know how to work a Panasonic NV-DA1..

I got a generic 1394 firewire port for it.. and package with the slot card is a Ulead video editing software..

but when i try capture, it says surrounded by Ulead that there's no device..

since my cam is a hand-me-down, I dont know if its got a camera software(or video editing software) along near it.. how would i be able to build the computer recognize the hardware?
