I Need Lots Of Advice For Filming A School Video Project?

first off, me and roughly 5 or 6 other friends are making a movie with a couple scene from the Diary of Anne Frank play thingy. What kind of camera should i be using? I hold a regular digital camera with video and a video camera (which is ripened and i have no hypothesis if i can put that on the computer for editing).
also i need to know what program to use to put shots together and expurgate them and stuff..
