New laptop, can't upload video from my DV camcorder?

Help, Just bought Toshiba a215-s7462. 250hd,2gbram laptop.I own a sony dcr-dvd101 camcorder. It records directly onto a small disk. The driver/software disk is not compatible near VISTA so I am unable to download it, but sony idicates that vista might own built in drivers for camcorders?. Camcorder come with USB cords contained by which I connect from my camcorder to computer. I have window movie maker-got message stating:import video could not find a compatible digital video device, when I tried to upload.No business what I do I cannot get the computer to start on a file/video, but it will recognize a E drive when connected? My aim is to try find a way to upload my video to my computer for editing purposes and after be able to burn to a dvd or?. Are within alternative ways to accomplish this. I am very tentative to digital media editing so please be specific and detailed. I so greatly appreciate the assist.

Finalize your small DVD disc in your camcorder and bring over to your PC's DVD drive.

Simple enough???
