What type of camcorder (under $1000) would be best to transcription student skits at academy?

I'm looking for a camcorder that would be suitable for trying to follow two or three students at a time acting on a massively small stage. My current camcorder-- a SONY Handycam-- is all right, but I'm looking to upgrade.
