Best storm chasing camera?
Im looking to purchase a camcorder for storm chasing this spring.. price range between $750-$1200(new or used)
The Canon HV20 and Sony HDR-HC7 look close to good contenders.
Things that are essential are low light operation... it looks close to the Sony has a slightly larger CMOS for lower feathery.
Quality of picture is also important obviously.
Good microphone... or external mic jack.
Should I look for an older model near the big lens (Canon has a few that are well brought-up and about 4 years older)... or achieve the newer HD model?
Thanks!
Answers: For starters, let it be particular that I am from Atlantic Canada and have beyond doubt no storm chasing experience. The closest thing I've come to storm chasing is watching Twister and a handful of National Geographic spots.
If I be you, I would certainly stir for one of these smaller lensed HD cameras over one of the larger lensed SD cams. The only path I'd actually debate it would be if you're planning on producing a tube show with your footage, and even afterwards, I'd probably still go for a smaller HD camera.
You're storm chasing, so you're probably not going to want to misuse a whole lot of time setting up a bigger camera, getting the exposure right, getting the lens a short time ago so, etc. You're probably going to be flying down the highway with your commander stuck out the window trying to obtain something on tape. Also, surrounded by 5 years time when you're looking back on your storm chasing adventures, you'll be glad it be in big def.
That being said, I've never owned or used a small HD camera resembling you're looking for, but by the looks of things, the two you've suggested look good. There may be a few others to consider though.
