Canon lens similar to Nikon 18mm-200mm?

I'm going to buy a Canon 40d and thinking of buying lens that can take close (18mm) and far (200mm) around here. What lens from Canon should I buy? I be thinking of Canon 28mm-200mm but there is so much price difference compare to Nikon 18m-200mm, why is that?

Answers:    I don't ponder canon needs to bring out another mediocre xx-200mm (they already enjoy the 28-200 filling that role), of late coz Nikon has one surrounded by the mkt. Remember they have have the optically superb EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 L IS USM in the mkt (it costs $2,200) . And they do enjoy the classic 24-105 f/4L and 28-135mm too.

The ONLY time you need a 18-200mm is when you are really trial to SLR photography and you want a lens that does everything since "you don't want to carry adjectives that stuff around". So the 18-200 makes profusely of sense, if SLR photography is a passing fancy you in recent times stop with it. Once you know your camera better you realize that its a mistake to cogitate in lingo of "one lens to rule them all" and you start exploring primes and the more reasonable "way of walking around lens".

The only other time you want a tele-zoom is when you start getting matured like me. I want a 10-1000mm f/1.0 IS lens that weigh only 1lbs and preferably costs around $1000. Till afterwards I will use my various combo of lenses to do like peas in a pod thing.
None on the other hand ... but don't worry. Canon have been trying to "one-up" Nikon since the hasty 80's.

Since the 18-200mm is so popular, Canon will have to any design one or see some of their users move back toward Nikon.

At that downfall of the focal length the difference between 18 and 28 is huge. Super wide vs. ho hum

If you don't already enjoy a lot of Canon chalice and a Canon DSLR or SLR, you may want to reconsider your choices (maybe the D300).

BOTH cameras are professional aspect.

Nikon has a couple of one and only features that Canon have all the same to incorporate in their cameras.

1. Two wheel one for adjusting aperture and another shutter speed.
2. Image Comment where on earth you can embed your copyright information with respectively exposure.
3. Radio controlled remote multiple flash.
I generally propose sticking to the manufacturer's own lenses, but Simga has a different "optically stabilized" 18-200 that has reviewed a bit well. You might look into that lens. I use the 18-200 on my Nikon D200 for nonspecific shooting and you are right - it certainly is a vastly convenient lens. It's not the world's "greatest" lens, but for casual shooting, it is moderately adequate. 18-200 is relatively a range to cover, so it involves some compromise as far as distortion, but nil that can't be handled on the computer until that time making a print.

Ace is probably right, though. Canon can't resist market pressure to bring out this lens forever.
