Nikon D40 or other for 1st SLR?
Answers: The D40 is a great beginner's SLR, but it does own the shortcoming of manual focus one and only on non "S" series lenses. The same holds true for any 3rd party optics that don't hold built-in autofocus motors. It's still my #1 recommended camera for the vast majority of tentative photographers.

Currently, I shoot with a two of a kind of Nikon D70's and a D50. They are great cameras with more compatible lenses than the D40.

If you can find a D50, D70, or D70s available, afterwards it's a nice option. Both series of DSLR's are all right designed and very flowing to handle.

I get the camera off of Ebay for lower than $380 and the lens from Craigslist for $80. Not bad for a $460 outfit!

Camera's for me are a really personal thing. It have to feel right surrounded by your hands because it really become an extension of who you are. I have a D40 and it's really nice, although, I still really prefer my FE2 from 1985.

If you're looking for a digital SLR, then something like the only tentative camera in your price band is the Nikon D40.
However, you might also consider a used digital SLR for around $400, but that would require you to do some shopping on eBay, craigslist, KEH.com, or your local pawnshops, plus your risks go up that you might capture a bad camera.
When figure your costs, don't forget to include the cost of a lens, cost of memory card(s), and possibly a flash unit.
As a first time dSLR user, I would try a used Nikon D70 or D70s. You might find one for around your price collection on eBay. D40 and D70 both have alike resolution, but the D70 is built a little better contained by my opinion and have much better button placement. The biggest advantage of the D70 is that you can use pretty much any autofocus lens that Nikon make. The D40 lacks the internal focus motor, so only AF-S and AF-I lenses are compatible for auto focusing.
