What is the best SLR digital camera for a budding photographer starting her own portrait business?
Answers: You need to read:
1) Posing
2) Light (natural light, augmented (light box) and studio lighting)
3) Depth of Field base on the setting.
If you understand these three piece you will be able to still use your existing gear and still thieve great pics. Since you want to do this as a business its a good view to develop your skills by assisting someone else in a studio or within their business. You will learn a million times more by assisting and observe someone else.
I can suggest getting a Canon 40D with a 135mm f/2L, 85mm f/1.8 and a 50mm f/1.4 near a couple of light boxes and alienbees but that will not distribute you the experience you need surrounded by posing and lighting. And these two make a world of a difference and own nothing to do near your gear.
Canon has a great digital SLR within that range. I own one, EXCELLENT camera, you can take packages on ebay including the macro lenses for phenominal pricing. I paid $1000 for the camera & 3 macro lenses!! Good Luck!! =)
