Are canon and nikon really the best?
What do you think?
And don't communicate me 'Canon is the best' or 'Nikon is the best', unless you can give me adjectives the reasons why to be precise so in comparision beside the other brands.
Answers: These two brands are extremely popular in the North American flea market (and elsewhere) because they are highly targeted to market to the mass market and they are, mostly speaking top quality examples of 35mm style cameras, however nearby are many more top competence cameras for larger formats (such as the Hasselblad previously mentioned by others) so they could only be considered "best" contained by a particular category. Nikon have given cameras to many renowned professionals and to other groups to promote their products and both Canon & Nikon spend a large amount of money to promote their products.
But no one but has mentioned Leica which is, IMO, the gold ingots standard of 35mm style cameras and compared to Canon or Nikon has just a tiny share of the market. Sort of close to comparing cars such as Bentley or Rolls Royce to a Cadillac.
So it really boils down to what is a good significance for the money.
For good competence DSLR's here is a list of top level manufacturers (in alphabetic order) most of whom put on the market to many professional photographers -
Canon, Fuji (collaborates next to Nikon), Leica (collaborates with Panasonic), Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax and Sony (now owner of the Konica/Minolta brands)
A flawless site to compare DSLR's is Steve's Digicams
And a good "buying guide" site is Digital SLR Guide
(see links below).
Among point and shoot cameras they are among the best along next to Fuji, Sony and Panasonic. SLR's are a different matter.
