Remote control for nikon d40?

for my nikon d40 and i cant seem to find it to work. im pretty sure i put it on the remote setting but when i click the button it wont work. the light doesnt even run on or anything. any idea what could be wrong? what do you enjoy to do to set up the remote for it? what am i doing wrong?
Answers: 1) check the orientation of the freestyle in the remote.
2) kind sure the battery is fresh and not limp.
3) set the D40 to receive the remote signal. If I recall correctly, there's 2 settings, one for remote and one for remote beside self timer. Under the second setting, there's a delay up to that time the shutter fires.
4) If none of those things work, exchange the remote--it's either deceased, broken or the wrong model.
When all else fail, READ & STUDY the Owner's Manual for your camera.
I'm guessing that you are trying to use the self-timer on the camera. Study that section contained by the Manual.

if adjectives else fails run out and buy the correct Nikon MLL3 remote for the camera
The only Nikon-approved remote for the D40 is the ML-L3.
The element you bought does not appear to be one, and that could account for it out of action.
If the unit come with instructions, they might relieve.
