Canon Rebel XT or Nikon D40?
Answers: Both the Digital Rebel XT and Nikon D40 are good cameras, yes, but they differ surrounded by what makes them polite.

The lens selection is great as okay, but since Nikon left out the contained by camera motor, non AF-S lenses will not auto focus on it. This means that your lens choices are between the tackle lens and the 55-200mm lens. Their are many other AF-S Nikkors, but these will cost around $500 and up. Well worth it if you can afford it. Now, I did not voice the non AF-S lenses would not work on the D40. They just will not AF.
If you still want the ruggedness, dependability, and great lens inspection of Nikon, I would suggest buying the Nikon D50, the older journal of the D40. That, or the D70s, a prosumer model, built like a container, and well worth the money. It and the D50 run anywhere from $400-$600. If you are considering photojournalism, the D70s would be an excellent place to start. It, similar to all other Nikon cameras besides the D40/D40x, have the in camera motor. The D70s would be an excellent choice.
So, for great similes, get Canon. But, similar to I said, I would NOT recommend the Digital Rebel XT. Once you hold this, and the kit lens, and quality and see what it is like, you'll will you would have a different camera. Trust me. I be going to buy this same exact camera, held it once, and was immediatly turned rotten. I got the Nikon D50 instead.
For great imagery, great build and durability, and great lenses, get the D70s, or even the D40. You wont regret it.

Both camera is very fitting - way course better than most point and shoot. The performance is pretty comparable so what you stipulation to worry is whether you're going to close to operating the camera or not - at which case I'm recommend you to go to a camera shop and compare it yourself.
When you compare, try to quality which camera felt more comfortable than the other, and which menu is more intuitive for you. Try to money the setting (aperture/shutter speed) and see which camera gives you the easier access to do so. After you done this, likelihood are you are going to like one better than the other.
Go beside the Nikon D40 because of the "vivid" color default saturation setting which you do not hold on the XT. The vivid setting is also defaulted on the LCD. Merely compare through the lcd screen, the image on the Nikon vs. the Canon and you'll find that the Nikon is superior and more colorful via the LCD. In charge to achieve better saturation images, you'll inevitability to process the XT photos using Photoshop, etc.
