I agree next to antoni. The hardest thing to do is to integer out where adjectives the buttons and features are. I remember, I was shooting near a Nikon D50 for about six months, next started with a D2xs and Fuji S5 Pro. Totally threw me rotten.
Nikon and Canon both have some advantages that the other doesn't own. If comparing the entry level DSLR, the Nikon is cheaper, and to me, feel more sturdy, but too small. The Canon Digital Rebel XTi is a bit bigger, but it just doesn't be aware of good and strong. When comparing other camers within the lineup, they only differ slightly, and this is where on earth the brand wars really start to increase. Such as D300 vs 40. 1Ds Mark III vs D3, and so on. I'll confer it to Canon for their choice of lenses that are cheap. Their more expensive lenses are really nice. Nikon has a a lesser amount of selection of lenses, but they are adjectives very excellent. The VR function is great.
I would activity to say from my own experience of shooting near both that Nikon are easier to use if you are constantly changing settings. The settings are adjectives within fingers get. When I was doing my comparisons this did not give the impression of being to be the case next to Canon. The last time I shot next to a Canon was almost a year ago on a 30D, I personally own two Nikons (a D200 and a D2H) and love how hastily I can adjust settings from ISO, to white balance, setting a custom white match... etc.
Both make excellent imagery and when set on similar settings/modes they make like peas in a pod images. And both enjoy a learning curve, the more stick time you win with one the quicker you will carry at maneuvering around the camera and its settings. A friend of mine that I work with shooting sports adjectives the time has an older Canon and almost all of his settings that he requirements are buried in menus, but he's so used to it that he can adjust settings surrounded by his menus almost as fast as I can short getting into any menus.
They're both excellent manufacturers and respectively leap-frog the other from year to year as far as latest and greatest fact set in their SLRs so don't verbs about which is better than the other. When starting a camera system, you own to think of the long-run because your lenses will not gain obsolesced and you will hold on to those for years, whereas your body will be "ancient" after 1 year.
If you're talking roughly speaking point and shoots, I prefer Canon to Nikons.
