Nikon lens.. back?
Answers: As stated above, the 55-200mm is a virtuous lens. But for a few dollars more, I'd recommend the 55-200mm VR. VR (vibration reduction) will help steady you and the camera. In most situations, it eliminate the need for a tripod.

If you want a brochure focus lens with a longer focal length, look at a used Nikon 75-300mm, 70-300mm ED, or 70-300mm G. I hold the first one and use it for college football games and pro basketball. (WNBA & NBA)
Nikon makes a great 70-300mm VR lens, but expect to spend around $500 for that optic. The 70-300mm VR will autofocus beside your D40, though.
I hope is is helpful. If you enjoy any other questions, please ask.
It's an OK lens for the price, but if you check out the bright "VR" version you'll see it get much better reviews and only costs a few dollars more.
