Nikon D70s on camera flash is giving me brutal shadows?

I'm used to Nikon film cameras and own always a short time ago used the on camera flashes, I've never had such vile shadows before as ably as a lot of my photos are blown out. I'm departure it on auto and auto flash, is there a trick to stopping this? Like I said I never have this issue with my hoary film cameras. Also I own a separate flash I can't seem to grasp to work on this camera, is it a special setting? I got it to work once and immediately I can't. It is about 10 years matured, but worked on my film bodies.


Answers:    Is the shadow from the lens or lens hood or something else?

If it's the shadow from your lens/hood, later you'll have to any switch to a smaller lens (basic spacial relationships right?) or switch to an external mounted flash unit similar to nikon's SB-600/SB800. I use the SB-600 and occassionally the SB-800.

Not sure what flash you're trying to use with it but the D70 is not compatible near just any Nikon or Nikon compatible Flash.

I know for sure it is compatible beside the SB-600 & SB-800.

To find out for sure, check on Nikon's website or call Nikon's toll free number (US simply I believe) directly to learn if the flash you're using is or is not compatible near the D70.

Try bouncing the flash directly above at the ceiling or at a wall. Try some with the flash straight up and some at an angle. You can also step down the flash, probably surrounded by 1/3 stop increments. The manual that come with the flash will show you how to do this. Direct flash is unflattering lighting and most photographers do whatever they can to avoid it.

You can capture a sync cord made for you camera and flash and shot with the flash sour camera or get an infrared transmitter that can trigger your flash past its sell-by date camera. For more money you can use wireless Pocket Wizards to trigger an off camera flash or even flashes.

Buy the SB-600 flash. Check to see if the newer, smaller quantity expensive SB-400 will work with your camera. If the SK-6 Power Bracket will work next to your camera, consider buying it also.

I am a firm believer in getting the flash stale the camera and on a bracket. My first real flash be a Vivitar 283 bought in Feb. 1976. Bought the off-camera bracket and flash sensor beside it. I still use it occasionally.

You might also try one of the innumerable diffusers offered for on-camera direct flash units. Look at what's offered at lumiquest.com or stofen.com if you don't want to invest surrounded by an off-camera flash.
