Answers: I believe with your budget you could progress with a slightly better camera body than that. I would check out the Elan 7NE. It have a faster maximum shutter speed (1/4000 v. 1/2000), and it captures more pictures within a burst (4fps versus 1.5fps). It also has one of the cooler AF systems, the eye-control system where on earth it tries to follow where your eye is going and focus on that spot. I'm still convinced that they should bring it rear, but that's just me :)
The 7NE also have E-TTL 2, which is Canon's flash system, but 2 has an extra factor over "regular" E-TTL in that it can work out the flash gain (power) based on subject distance from the camera, so you can utilize the capability of newer flashes like the 430EX or 580EX.
It's available for $340 brand bright or $240 used from the link below. Other than the 1V professional series, I regard this is the best film Canon SLR for your money.
