do i cut my losses and buy a foreign one or does some bright spark out there hold a diagnosis?

Answers:    It depends on what Sigma lens you bought. If you bought a cheapy, such as the 70-300mm, then yeah, you should probably replace it; especially next to a Nikkor. But, if it's something more expensive, maybe the 30mm f1.4, afterwards you should have it repaired.
Try getting it repaired and afterwards go for the trial lens.
