Nikon D40 Focus Help!?

I just bought a Nikon D40 and I am trying to switch the Focus mode, but every time I try and make over it, the option won't permit me and it says "This selection is currently unavailable near your current settings". Any ideas

Answers:    try within manual. Those auto or program mode won't tolerate your change heaps settings.
You are probably in a scene setting or auto setting of the camera. Try setting it within manual. You can also try your brochure. Go to the index page and look for "focus".
