Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi (400D) or Nikon D40?

For the past 3-4 years I've only been using a standard point and shoot but presently I want to go for a DSLR. I've be doing a bit of research and really narrowed it down to those 2. I want a camera which will last me at lowest a further 5 years and won't get outdated too rapidly. Also, is there anything coming out contained by the next 6 months or so that is to say worth holding on for?

My personal preference would be the Canon system. I am a working professional photographer, own used both systems, and now use Canon exclusively because it seem to be the more rugged camera system. I do much of my photography under smaller amount than ideal camera friendly conditions, and hold found Canon to work better, require less repairs, and last longer beneath rugged conditions. I have never notice a difference in actual imitation quality between the two systems.
As to will something up to date be coming out in the in the neighbourhood future, yes, as you would expect it will, probably every couple of weeks. Expect your equipment (like your computer) to be outdated as soon as you but it. If you always skulk for the latest article, you will never buy anything! Go ahead and buy as soon as you are ready, and savour your new camera system.

Go next to the Rebel XTi rather than the d40 Because it have more megapixels as well as a better assortment of lens. Canon Just have the better lens although if i were you i'd loaf maybe 3 months because since the up to date 40d came out Canon will come out next to the new newspaper of the Rebel series as well so contained by about 3 months start to look for upright deals on the camera
