About Digital cameras?
Answers: DSLR camera use interchangeable lenses and own NO digital zoom feature.
There are two cameras that you may want to consider .. One is the Nikon D40x next to 18-55mm zoom lens or the Canon Xti with 18-55mm zoom lens.

A single-lens reflex camera (SLR) doesn't show you optical zoom, because it doesn't enjoy any.
An SLR is just a camera, but lacking a lens. You choose the lens you want based upon what you want to shoot. I'm sure you've see the giant telephoto lenses on the sidelines of sporting events or in the African bush contained by National Geographic shows. This is one kind of lens, and in that are hundreds of others.
That adds cost to buying an SLR camera, but it give you flexibility.
From what you're saying, my guess is that an SLR is overkill for what you're shooting. In that travel case, I'd recommend two good point-and-shoot digital cameras to you.

Both of the first answers are correct, but I looked-for to add, if the camera you are looking at does come beside a lens, you look at the MM (Millimeter) range it give to figure out how much zoom you bring back (or not) from that lens. If it says something resembling 45-195MM, well it might be resembling having a 2x or 3x zoom on a point and shoot, I hope this make sense to you, I'm not really good at explaining :)
