Nikon D40x next to kitlens or Nikon D40 beside paraphernalia and an extra lens?
Answers: If you're talking more or less a D40x with an 18-55mm or a D40 next to the same lens plus a 55-200mm, I'd seriously look at the D40 outfit. I've see the 55-200mm paired with both cameras surrounded by ads and within stores. My one recommendation would be to skip the 55-200mm and catch the 55-200mm VR (Vibration Reduction) as it's only nearly $50 more and is a much better lens.
If you have other compatible lenses available (S series), next the D40x is the choice I'd make. It you don't enjoy any other lenses to use and won't be able to buy any for a while, I'd look at the D40 and grasp the VR version of the 55-200mm.
The extra megapixels are nice, but have 6mp isn't a dealbreaker.
Here's some photos I took with a D50 (same resolution as the D40) beside an older 75-300mm lens using illustrious ISO settings.

I'd stay with Nikon optics for your stater gear and recommend a two lense setup. Having a DSLR with just one lens is like playing golf next to only one club. You'll be missing the others for a long time.
I hope this is compassionate.

If one of the "kits" include a Nikkor lens, choose that one.
The D40X with the "standard" utensils lens - the 18-55 - is a very nice choice. If you want a VERY nice upgrade - still surrounded by one lens - see the Nikon D40x, 10.2 Megapixel, SLR, Digital Camera Kit with Nikon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens and Two SanDisk 2GB Ultra II Secure Digital (SD) Card at B&H Photo. This tools costs $200 more than the 18-55 kit, but you would never find a second lens to make a payment this range for that thoughtful of money.
B&H Photo is available through Yahoo! Shopping. Search for D40X and this kit will come up, probably first on the catalogue.
