Well this will be a challenge because one minute you will be photographing groups (wide angle) and the next possibly capturing the looks on their faces from a distance (telephoto) So for one lens to do a reasonable job you will need the 18-200mm VR. Sadly the damn thing costs more than your camera, a recently has been hard to get. Alternatively use two lenses. I'll take a wild guess and assume you have the 18-55 'kit' lens which will do for group shots etc. The 70-300 VR costs about 2/3 of what you paid for your camera and gives the important VR to steady up shots that are taken with longer focal lengths.
Nikon just released a couple of months ago a 55 to 200mm VR zoom for only $249.00. This is a really outstanding lens. I use it for almost everything as it has the vibration reduction (VR) built into the lens.
