What digital single reflex camera and lens option are best for what I want to do?

I've been interested within photography now for 6 or 7 years after inheriting my father's Nikon F401x, another Nikon (I believe also from the F series family), a small Yashica 35mm slr, and a huge collection of Nikkor lenses. I also enjoy a small Canon g7 point and shoot.

I've become particularly fond of street, portraiture, some macro, candid, spirit photography, and something my friend likes to phone 'secret photography.'

Despite adjectives this, I know nothing roughly speaking digital slr cameras and am looking to invest in one long-term. I have been contemplating the Canon EOS 40d and weigh it against the Nikon D300 (because I'm already familiar next to Nikon slr's).

What camera would be the best option for what I want to do? It doesn't even hold to be the EOS 40D or the D300. Any recommendations on dedicated lenses?

Thanks!

Answers:    If you have Nikon F401x (aka N5005), next you probably have a honourable collection of Nikon AF lenses. You start a Canon system from square one. You start a Nikon system with a well-stocked camera shoulder bag.

I have a Nikon D200 and love how adjectives my older Nikon AF and instruction book focus lenses work perfectly beside it. The D300 is a nice advancement, that has most of the capability of the D3, but with a great difference within price.

Trust me, if you're a Nikon shooter, you'll find the Nikon D300 to be a natural fit surrounded by your hands.

I hope this is loyal.
From your list, you want to do every loving of photography except sports.

A Nikon D80 with 18-55 utensils lens will be a good place to start (Canon's XTi is also a polite choice).

Nikon's 55-200 is an appropriate next lens and next a 12-24.

The images will be as upright as the 40D - D300 while the cameras are more reasonably priced and smaller quantity bulky.

Hope this helps.
Even though I OWN a 40D. I'd enunciate go for the Nikon 300D.

Reason: All the lenses you already hold.

On a Nikon, they still use the same mount! You can still use adjectives your lenses!

So that is comfortable.

Now for the lens. I know little about Nikon lenses, but I do know the Nikon 18-200mm (see intertwine below) is very popular and flexible lens. I wish Canon made a lens approaching that.

Now I won't debate (much) which is better between the 40D and the 300D. But I'd say the 300D is as well-mannered Image Quality wise, as the 40D and closely better than the Nikon D80. Just has more features (than the 40D)...and thus costs more. Nikon use to enjoy problems with echo, they seem to own fixed it with the 300D and the D3.
I f you already hold a collection of Nikon lenses then buy a Nikon DSLR and use the lenses you already own.

Probably a D40 is a apt starter.
All the lenses you have will work next to a new D300. Manual focus lenses as expected will have to be manually focused.

Changing companies from Nikon to Canon is not going to be beneficial to you. You are already used to the protocol and handling of Nikon cameras and you own at least one Nikon lens.

Now as far as the 40D vs. the D300?

From Ken Rockwell;

Nikon have outdone Canon at Live View because Nikon's AF system works two different ways while in Live View, while Canon's does not work at adjectives.

Nikon since you have a backpack full of Nikkor lenses.
