Keep on asking (Canon lenses)?
I've be investigating lenses to buy along a Canon 40D for this christmas, I am looking at two and comparing two canon lenses at he moment, please indulge ...
EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 IS USM and EF Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM ...
Now using photodoto.com I am able to see plenty of sample through flickr.com I must say I gain a total different feeling within end result from these two lenses. They are similar within price where I am. Now what exactly is L-series within Canon lenses, is it that much special than non-L lenses. The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM gives a more professional impression whilst the EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 IS USM gives a more contemporary thought , almost a Nikon feeling surrounded by color etc. I might be wrong.
How would one decide between the two ?
Thank you so much
Answers: Between these two lenses, you'd settle on based upon what you are photographing and what your wishes are.
If you shoot mostly wide shots or shots resembling landscapes or street scene, then the 17-55mm is the blatant choice.
If you shoot more people, more tight shots similar to portraits and don't need to be so broad, the 24-105mm is the obvious choice. If you entail more telephoto, the 24-105 is also an obvious choice.
The difference contained by feeling is because these lenses enjoy different fields of panorama, and handle depth of paddock differently. It's like looking at a panorama shot with a widespread angle, then looking at a baseball player swinging at a orb taken with a 400mm lens--different emotional state because the lenses have different characteristics.
However, ultimately, it's up to you as the photographer/artist/creator to create the mood within your photos.
As for L-glass, expect fewer aberration and distortions in an already excellent Canon lens splash.
It is not that you won't be able to use the EF-S on a full frame body (if you settle on to upgrade later). The 17-55 mm EF-S is equal to 27 - 88 mm and the 24 - 105 is equal to 38 - 168 mm thus and the 24-105 thus isn't very "wide" on your camera however it's "longer" and you unquestionably get the sweet spot (as it be designed for a full frame camera and the 40D only see 2/3 of it).
A friend bought 30D and that lens, and he is really happy near it. The reviews have be good, too.
I don't hold the 24-105 mm lens--decided to get the 24-75 mm f 2.8 instead. I know it's simply a stop faster and no IS, but I have really cheerful with it. Here is an regular photo taken with it: http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?ac...
Either lens is a fine choice. I also go with the 24-70 F2.8L instead of the 24-105 F4 IS. For that focal length IS is idle and I like have the extra stop if nothing else for bokeh. The problem near the 17-55 is its is only designed for the x0D, and nonconformist series camera's. If you'd like to ever move up to a 1D or a 5D, you have need of to sell the lens. Also, the L series are weather hermetic, and while the 17-55 is a great lens, I don't believe it is weather sealed.
