Answers: The hdd stores adjectives your games saves, profiles, downloaded content, etc. If you dont hold a memory card [512 MB] or a hdd, then no you cant experience the games to the max because you cant rescue anything =[
if you only plan on have a few game save, then a cheaper memory card will do. However, if u suggest you'll download demos, have more than one profile, accumulate all your team game saves and hold on to them, you should get the HDD

But for games that say "live" on it you can play them basically install an upate for the xbox 360 ^^
