Just play games on it bcz you enjoy bought it for games .and if u wana watch movies next buy an add on HD DVD player.
and as far as the standing and scratch of disk is concerned .
plz dont move ur xbox360 while the disk is inside the Box.thats the main principle which cause scratch .ok
placing it vertical or horizontal doesnt make any problem.newly dont move it when the disk is inside.

When i get ''the rings of death'' i sent my xbox back(i had a year warranty)to the company that made it..also do not bring ur xbox spinal column to were you bought it, ring up customer nurture and they will pick it up..i would strongly recommend this if you still have warranty on your xbox to some extent than wrapping it in a towel or something and also dont buy the extra devotee its more trouble than its worth
