Hi there - as far as I know, the PS3 doesn't support WMV playback. You want to download the WMA file to your computer, convert it into mp4 and consequently copy it back across - not just the thing.
This might not be much help, but although I've not downloaded WMV files from the Net, I enjoy played them on my PS3 and on my Sony Car Stereo - so I don't think it's a CODEC (Driver) issue.
The PS3 does not support WMV (video), though it and the PSP support WMA (audio). This is because it costs $20,000 a year to licence WMA, but $400,000 a year for WMV. Sony aren't zealous to give Microsoft that kindly of support.

You will need a transcoder program to convert such files on a PC. There are programs such as TVersity which will stream stuff from your PC to your PS3 and transcode on the fly. For better power though, convert offline and transfer to your PS3.
