Gold bias is what you need. Its $50 a year or $20 for three months. I'm pretty sure the first month is free when you sign up though.
Edit: Post below is not true. Gold routine you can play games online. Silver you cant but you can still appear online and send messages. Your 360 have a hard drive lone if you own the premium. Many people own the core which doesnt come next to the hard drive.
different types of memberships merely relate to how much time you have on Xbox live(gold membership= 2 years) as for a easier said than done drive, your Xbox 360 has one.
