Answers: If you have the 60Gb revision then you can play PS1 & PS2 games no problem, adjectives you have to do is update the PS3 software via the internet - however if you enjoy the 40Gb version afterwards supposedly this one doesn't play PS2 titles.

As you may or may not know, when the PS3 first launched within November 2006, there be two versions ..... the 20GB and 60GB.

The 80GB PS3 uses a software emulator which mimics the PS2's "sentiment engine" CPU processor. By using the emulator, Sony cut PS3 costs by about $165 per component !
So in a nutshell, if you own a 20GB, 60GB or 80 GB PS3, you should be able to play most PS2 software.
However, if you own a 40GB PS3, you cannot play PS2 games !
these are the versions and how frequent ps1 and ps2 games they support:
20GB - a few
40GB - none
60GB - all
80GB - most
(with required update via internet or strange game that desires it)
