I agree that the most credible culprit is the power supply...a big square box inside your PC where the power cord is connected. But minus being competent to look at it, I'd say that masses other failures are possible, from the processor to the video card, there's heaps things inside a PC vulnerable to overheating.
When you progress to turn on your pc, does the power muted go on / do you hear any noise when you push the power button? If so that would probably rule out the power supply.
To give you more proposal I'd also like to know your system specs. Is this an brand new computer or a very prehistoric one? It totally changes how you should approach this.
