Can Blu-Ray DVD players play regular DVDs? Do they upconvert them or play as Progressive Scan?

Blu-ray and HD DVD players upconvert and play normal DVDs. In nonspecific, HD DVD players are the better upconverters.

I have an HD DVD player (HD-A2) and while it is a slightly inferior upconverting player to my Oppo 971, I still use it to play DVDs on my 720p projector, and the picture is pretty darn flawless on my 110" screen. Not slightly as sharp as HD DVD disks ... but close. I suspect it wouldn't be as close if I had a 1080p projector.
Yes BluRay player can play DVDs.
