Why do solitary movie channel seize distorted when using a coax splitter?

I have NTC cable small screen at my apartment. I get the HBO channel as well as a few other movie channel. I have my cable output hooked up to a TV tuner card surrounded by my PC. I added a second TV tuner to my PC yesterday and purchased a 1in-2out coax splitter. I noticed that the movie channel have fuzzy picture and distortion when using the splitter. Why is this? I in recent times purchased a powered coax amp online to hopefully fix this problem, but I would still like to know what is cause this (and if the powered splitter will work).

Answers:    If you only hold one or two splits you problem is not signal loss. More than likely you own the wrong bandwidth of splitter, get on rate up to 2 Ghz. The other issue could be the hook up in you PC.
your signal loses extrical strength, you can buy signal boosters and places similar to radioshack or even rent one from your local cable company
