I want to get DirecTV but don't want to hold a commitment. If I buy the equipment from a friend, would I still have the deposit or 2 year contract?

Yes. Regardless of where on earth you get the equipment you will still enjoy the same programming commitment in recent times as if you leased or purchased the equipment from DTV.
However, contained by my opinion it's worth it. If you're into Sports and HD after DTV is your best option regardless of the commitment.
