What hookups do the upconverting DVD players own?
Answers: Depends on the model. Most will have HDMI now, and probably component, but you need to be cautious because there are normally limitations on resolution available over component (for copy protection reasons). Note that HDMI will have HDCP (High Definition Copy Protection) that will inevitability to 'handshake' with the TV to allow an HD signal to exceed, but on most modern equipment this is automatic and from the user's perspective HDMI will allow HD when component doesn't.
That said, don't feel you enjoy to buy the most expensive HDMI cable .. you shouldn't need to spend more than $30-40 at most.
Also consider that if you are buying a giant end HDTV, scale to HD by the TV may be superior to a budget upscaling DVD player (and you would therefore be better to nurture a 480p signal (or even 480i) and let the HDTV do the upscaling). It's difficult to read out without truly testing, but my counsel is to not buy an inexpensive (~$100) upscaling DVD player. Read reviews to find a good one (e.g. the OPPO HD981 or sooner models are great performers). You could also consider the lowest priced HD DVD player (HD-A2 or HD-A3) too, since in PS to playing HD DVDs they also work as a good upscaling DVD player.
