Should I buy an upconverting DVD player?
Answers: With Toshiba HD players for smaller quantity than $200.00 (180.00 thru amazon.com) for a 1080p player that upconverts and a 1080i player for less than $150.00 (129.00 thru amazon.com) and 2 free movies surrounded by the box with a post in rebate for 5 more of your choice, that may be the mode to go. I hold an upconverting and I doubt that it was a dutiful investment.
The issue you described with blacks wash out is due to the LCD, not the DVD player. Because LCD requires back lighting, blacks can be wash out, or grayed by the back-lighting.
Plasma is better at displaying blacks because it does not need a rear light.
The resolution provided by standard DVD is more than ample for a 20" LCD HDTV. You did not mention the TV's aspect ration, is 16:9 or 4:3. Up conversion will provide a 16:9 ratio when you playback 16:9 anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1) DVD.
I have be thinking about duplicate purchase. I have fixed to wait for a time longer for the BlueRay / HD war to termination and just buy one of those.
I be at Best Buy the other day and saw a BlueRay movie playing and it looked incredible!
I suspect it won't assistance you much. I say that for two reason:
1) with appropriate DVDs you get a "great" picture; and,
2) the dismal scenes are probably rough on HD material too.
I suspect it is the LCD itself, not resolution / poor video processing that does it. Low dynamic list on LCD panels is a adjectives issue. This could be verified by seeing if you get equal effect with poorly lit HD material as okay as dark DVDs.
That said, if you want to try an upconverting player to see if you can benefit I don't expect cheaper upconverting players are going to do anything (Your HDTV will do as good or better job).
If I required to try it I'd buy an HD-A3 HD DVD players (they just go on sale for going on for $130 in the US or $170 within Canada -- with free HD DVD movies). They are excellent upconverting DVD players (and smaller amount expensive than an Oppo (the best upconverting player).
Hope this helps.
Specifically for the problem you hold, should you buy an upconverting dvd player? maybe NOT.
Would I buy an upconverting player only for a much better picture quality? hell YEAH!!
i bought a SONY upconverting dvd player for $90 and I'm loving every bit of it..it be a way cool investment. I can very soon sit out and wait for the HD and Blue shaft of light battle to settle once and for adjectives.
In the mean time, I'm enjoy awesome quality DVD movies.
Disclaimer* I own a 1080 p 42" LCD
