Should I use optical digital audio cable, coaxil, digital audio cable, or both?

When connecting Blu-ray player to my receiver via optical digital audio cable, do I also inevitability to connect them via coaxial digital audio cable? Do those cables work together, or is it an any or situation. Reason I ask is because the jacks are right next to respectively other on my receiver, but beside only the optical cable plugged within, I am getting no sound. What do you expect? Thanks.
