Answers:    I too bought a home theater system and it too one and only works for dvd's i called the company they said it wasn't made for tv which be sad explanation it cost 200$ but i took it back and get an RCA cheaper and better. The company who doesn't play tv is phillips.
Do you have the cable hooked up to the TV or the DVD player? You want them connected to the TV. Verify your installation with the guide.

Yes, the surround sound system have to be on.
It depends on what tv you have and how old/new it is. near are a few ways to do it. If you have a cable box run alike cords except from the cable box.
1.hook up RCA's to the "out" connection on the spinal column of your tv.
2. use an optical cable from the tv to the receiver.
3. use an HDMI cable.
audio out on your tv to audio surrounded by on the reciever
