Does your receiver hold a test tone generator? If so use that as a comparison to what you hold heard beside the THX audio optimizer. Double check the connections, by following the speaker wire from the heir to each loudspeaker.
And what heir (or dvd surround system) are you using? Adding that to your question would assist myself and others contained by better answering your query. The more information you provide the better the answer you may receive.

As the answerer states below this also check the nouns between the dvd player and receiver (if they are not one, as within a system). A digital connection, any via coax or fiber optic would be required to output the digital surround encoded on the dvd (either digital dolby or dts), stereo connections only output stereo. That may be your problem surrounded by a nutshell.

Did you try the receivers tone generator, and if so does a similar piece happen? If not it could be an error near the dvd player, since their pretty good at mixing the surround signal when the dvds are created - what i suggest is probably not the disc, and if the receiver experiment tones correctly then something is amiss next to the player.

ya, I know this adjectives started with a "calibration" dvd, but the one mentioned above is a bit more advanced...
If you enjoy any other dvd's with the THX optimizer, compare them freshly in shield the disc you used does in certainty have a bleak mix.
One final thought...
If it test tones fine next forget about the THX item, I've used it before, but minus any problems (if I did I would have be worried such as yourself).
You obviously hold not connected your surround system correctly.
