Answers: Spend the $500, even more would be better, speakers are the most important sector of sound. I don't achieve the $1000 on a receiver and just $200 on speakers, stupid. $1000 on speakers and $200 on the receiver.
At or around $500 it doesn't really concern as long as it's not Bose (stay away from Bose)

These are approximates you might find them cheaper.
There are many others. Remember you take what you pay for (well not bose, next to them you get even smaller number, way less), things cost more for a drive.
You could get small Bose speakers that will not whip much room but have awesome nouns.
Advent or Pioneer speakers would be another option for the price reach.

I be in alike boat last year. I considered necessary a DVD Surround sound system to jump with my unmarked TV for Christmas but I didn't have profoundly of cash to spend. Here's what I did.
On boxing daytime, wake up really impulsive (2-4AM) and go to the nearest Best Buy or big box electronics store. Remember to bundle up and bring hot chocolate if you live somewhere cold.
Big stores customarily have sale right after Christmas to clear inventory for the new year and finish the holiday season on a dignified note(revenues).
Call me crazy doing it. After all the fracas I get my DVD 5.1 Surround system and All-In-One printer for $10 EACH!
Not sure if you'd be in to this method but it's worth a try.
Look into the Klipsch quintet systems or the Polk RST system. A set of these used to run give or take a few $500, but do not include a subwoofer. Gallow makes some softball sized speakers that I hold seen sold for give or take a few $115/speaker.
Also check out the Definitive Technology ProMonitor speakers. They sell these through BestBuy so you can audition them.
You have need of a subwoofer for small speakers because they are incapable of producing sounds below about 100 hz.
