Is laserdisc any better than HD-DVD/Blu-ray or DVD ?
Answers: Its not a matter of better or worse ( I still own mine). But the format never really took off. It be the best analog video source of the time a vast upturn over VHS and near that of DVD level. But the disks are HUGE, and cost a small fortune. Most movies will not fit onto one disk. The other problem was CAV vs. CLV disks, I am fortunate surrounded by that I bought the Pioneer Elite DVD/ LD combo that supported both disk types. The second generation of LD players supported Dolby Digital, big bonus rear in the time.
Because of the huge disks the disk transport requires cleaning and lubing on a more regular basis. I hold the original Star Wars Trilogy on Laser Disk and I still keep under surveillance it. ( I like the productive versions vs. the remastered ones). And I am competent to watch within Dolby Digital surround. Awesome.
I think that HD-DVD and Blu-ray may be head the same path as laser disk. And that is the plea I am holding off getting one, until here is a clear winner contained by format, and when the general public chooses to adopt it. But next to advancements contained by other areas a disk based medium may not be necessary and a digital copy cost nil to produce. Look to the future not to what replaces a olden innovation.
No. Laserdisc is ancient, and just uses generous CDs. Forget it.
