Setting up home cinema?

I live in France and own a 'normal' TV set connected to a 6 year old Amstrad digi- box beside which we can receive all UK terrestial channel and can play CDs and DVDs through a DVD player/ recorder (2 years old now). Everything is connected via SCART lead. I would like to promote my system and am looking to buy a straightforward not too expensive surround sound/home cinema system to bolt on to my existing system without have to invest in a unmarked TV at present. I am however expecting to have to buy a current DVD player. As you have probably guessed I know fundamentally little about this so can someone support me how to proceed and the basics of what to look for and to buy etc.

Answers:    I would suggest buying a dvd player which have a surround sound system built into it, its probably the cheapest and easiest road to set up a home cinema.
