Making dvds that are playable on dvd players?

heres the question, i enjoy movies on my laptop and computer, how can i burn the files on a dvd r and have it playable within a dvd player? do i need to use a DVD+R or DVD-R or do i necessitate a special drive in the computer/laptop? oh and an additional, what is the difference between the +R and -R , thanks within advance
