Answers: I have a huge tv beside a lot of hookups and what i own found is that using optical hooked up to a surround sound system give you that added little clarity that a true audiophile wants. and the hdmi next to 1080p is your visual.
This will depend on you audio processor. If your addressee and or processor is newer and has the handiness to decode HDMI audio than your set. Use the HDMI cable and your a Happy Camper.
If not dispatch the HDMI to the display and us a Digital cable to the processor (IE Coaxial or Optical).

If you hold a cheap DVD player, the six channel audio is the means of access to go, but if you hold a DVD player that processes for full resolution HDMI, then run next to it! Less processing is always better than more processing if the signal is equal, and analog six waterway requires a lot of processing.
