Answers:    Becuase with the current standars you would acquire interference between handsets, being competent to pick up on others conversations and such. They have a restricted distance to stop that from happening, and not need to make more sophisticated, and expensive technology to prevent interference.
You're better past its sell-by date with a cell phone, that style you can DUMP VERIZON and their surcharges....
