Answers: by getting one; most companies need a bt strip in place to proposition you a service.
Bt owns the lines, towers, conection boxes etc etc, there are few (i ponder NTL is one) that you can go through directly but they arn't much cheaper than BT.
On the plus side though you will be getting up to date cables (if you dont own them at all) which will mean your nouns speed should be better than if you just signed up to a company using outmoded (less capacity) cables.
you could take wireless a bit more expensive but you can use ur lap top anywhere.
