Can I use my computer as an answering contraption near a landline phone?

I just get a new landline phone to replace my prehistoric ghetto one; only problem is, there's no answering contraption! Is there a track to hook up a landline phone to my computer and have the computer be my answering gadget? I find it hard to believe nobody's invented something to do this... especially contained by the era before VoIP and cell phones be so popular. Any thoughts? :)
