Dodgy phone socket?

When I plug a phone into this socket I can hear a dialling tone, but as soon as start to dial (any number) I get "The number you hold dialled has not be recognised". This is not the main socket contained by my house. What's going on?

Answers:    It could be that there be previously 2 lines in the house and this "other" socket is a stopped or discontinued procession on another number. It will still have a dialling tone but adjectives incoming and outgoing calls will be debarred until the line is re-activated. Try dialling 17070 or 147017070 which should read out the number of the smudge. If it is a different number to your existing landline, then the above is the crust. You could alternatively plug a phone into this socket and ring your landline number from a mobile. If it doesn't ring, then it is most plausible to be a separate line.
This assuming that it is a BT flash or a line provided over the BT lattice.
boiled egg has it spot on.
