Answers: yes, the main base-phone have a build-in router and firewall....! so it can talk to the 6-10 extensions you get around your house....
To answer your question accurately, some assumptions own to be made (unless you clarify otherwise).
I will assume you are referring to standard PSTN (public switched telephone network) home phones that hold the new DECT (digitally enchanced cordless telecommunications) cordless functionality.
I will also assume within is only 1 influential PSTN phone line coming into the house.
I will assume you are not including phone systems that hold PBX functionality (typically for businesses).
I will also assume you are Not referring to phones that are VoIP capable, wireless or not.
To the best I can find out, DECT phones do not if truth be told "route" calls to the multiple handsets registered near a home phone base component. In reality, they don't route call anymore than the old cordless phones did.
The call are essentially "broadcast" to all the cordless phones "registered" to the underneath simultaneously. Thus, by virtue of the phone up being "broadcast" vs "routed", any or adjectives of the cordless handsets can pickup the call (and thus hold 3-way conversations, if desired).
Because PSTN phone calls are not carried over Internet in that is no need for "routers" or "firewalls", or virus protection, etc.
That said, within are phones now that are "dual function", consequence that they are capable of handling call from both Internet (VoIP) and landline (PSTN).
In this case, the PSTN call are completely independent of the VoIP calls.
But because the VoIP call originate and cancel over Internet, the ethernet line feed into your dual-function phone will "typically" need to be at the rear a NAT router/firewall.
In this case the VoIP information is essentially "routed" to your IP phone portion of the dual-function phone. But, the multiple cordless handsets registered to the base part are not getting routed to them - it is being "broadcast" to them.
If I am wrong within my assesment, can someone please post references that clearly indicate otherwise.
