I'm wondering in the region of 4-way calling.?

I just answered a question roughly speaking a weird phone call and very soon I'm wondering about it, myself.

My daughter lives with her boyfriend and his mom.

A few night ago, his mom called me and asked who, from this number, had call there. It wasn't me and I had no explanation for it. I have both handsets in front of me all dark. She called back a few minutes after that, saying she just get another call from my house. Again- it wasn't me. Even though she used *69 to call the number rear that had called. I be starting to feel myself get annoyed and figure the woman must have been drunk. She didn't call upon back that night, at most minuscule.

Now, after seeing this other question about the problem I started thinking just about it again. One of the answerers said that another party could do this by using 4-way calling.

My question is: If it be someone pulling a prank on us with 4-way calling, how does that work and why did it seem approaching it was only me doing the calling? Wouldn't both party be answering the phone, saying "hello?" at the same time? And, if it happen again, is there anything we can do to find out who it was?

Can someone explain this to me, please?
