Answers: they are probably right when the say you cannot unlock it. what you are seeing is a phone that have been "flashed" differently to the phone you enjoy.
what i mean by "flashed" is when they make the phone they install the software on it. they will have instructions from all the phone providers and depending on which provider it is will depend on what software is put on the phone, an red phone will have different software i.e games, screensavers than a vodaphone phone.
this flashing will also dictate whether the phone can be unlocked from the net or not, some phones cannot be unlocked full stop where as others can.
roughly phone networks do this to stop people getting a free phone on a lb15 tarrif, selling it after unlocking it, pocketing lb300 and buying a cheap wages as you go and using the contract sim card contained by it.
they will also make a unquestionable number of phones that are not locked to the networks which you can buy online or in abiding shops as sim free at full price, this is what they are refering to on e-bay, it is sim free or unlocked.
sell it on e-bay and plug the network it is on. it will probably go and its as safe as houses as you dont transport the phone until you have the money within your paypal account.
Don't forget, you'll still hold to pay bad the remainder of your contact
